After the mid-season return for the epic disaster themed adventure of La Brea, NBCUniversal just renewed the show for a third season via. Deadline. With many eager fans and new audiences tuning in, the show’s return would foresee a trend of further success moving forward.
The show follows people who get sucked into a massive sinkhole in Los Angeles, after which they find themselves in a foreign land filled with dangerous creatures and perilous environments. They would have to band together in order to survive and potentially even escape.
In the show, the cast of characters include Natalie Zea (Passions, Justified), Eoin Macken (The Night Shift, Grey Elephant), Jon Seda (Chicago Fire, Chicago Justice), Nicholas Gonzalez (The Good Doctor), Chiké Okonkwo (New Tricks, Paradox), Zyra Gorecki (Chicago Fire, The Kelly Clarkson Show), Jack Martin (The Legend of Ben Hall, Locust), Veronica St. Clair (To The Beat, 13 Reasons Why), Rohan Mirchandaney (Mystery Road, Hotel Mumbai), Lily Santiago (Vineyards, Viral), Josh McKenzie (The Hopes and Dreams of Gazza Snell, Shortland Street), Tonantzin Carmelo (Undone, The English), and Michelle Vergara Moore (The Unusual Suspects, Condor).
David Appelbaum is the creator and co-showrunner for La Brea and works as an executive producer with Avi Nir (Tyrant, Allegiance), Alon Shtruzman (The Champion, A Small Light), Peter Traugott (The Mentalist, Wisdom of the Crowd), Rachel Kaplan (The Brave, Do Not Harm), Chris Hollier (Roswell, New Mexico, The Originals), Adam Davidson (Grey’s Anatomy, United States of Tara), Bryan Wynbrandt (Alcatraz, God Friended Me), Steven Lilien (God Friended Me, Gotham), Ken Woodruff (The Mentalist, Gotham), and Arika Lisanne Mittman (Dexter, Timeless). La Brea is produced by Universal Television & Australia’s Matchbox Pictures with Keshet Studios being associated.
The series not only returns from the hiatus with more acclaim than ever, but it also was granted by NBC to produce another 4 episodes for its second season, boosting the total number to 14 episodes. According to Deadline, it had been at the forefront of Peacock’s viewership since its first season in September 2021. It served very popular with viewers who were in the 18-49 age range demographic. La Brea also served to be the best TV drama for the 2021-2022 Season.
With the confirmation of a third season, NBC picked up six episodes for the show, making an allusion that the show might end with season three via. Deadline. This is due to the inevitable ending of the Writer’s Guild of America West (WGA) contract which would expire on May 1st. This would entail a potential work stoppage for shows and pilots for the fall season of 2023. That along with the DGA and SAG-AFTRA contracts also expiring June 30, studios would have to either make room for pilots that are already drafted or finish off shows without derailing franchises.
That being said, it is not a guarantee that this would be the definitive end for La Brea, and so far, season two has shown to expand on what came before it and provide moments of humor with absurdity interlinked with the drama between these flawed characters, which is what fans love in the series. You can watch the show only on Peacock Plus starting January 31st.
