‘Creature Commandos’ Named First Project Of Gunn and Safran’s Rebooted DC Universe

DC Studios continued to flood the interwebs with the announcement of the new connected DC Universe’s film and TV slate. While many fans waited with bated breath for news about Superman and Batman projects, co-CEOs Peter Safran (Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom) and James Gunn (Peacemaker) revealed Creature Commandos as the first project for their decade-long narrativeaccording to Comicbook.

“As we craft the plan for DC Studios, we are thrilled to share with fans the first 10 stories they can expect from the unified DC Universe featuring some of our most well-known characters as well as the next generation of marquee characters,” Safran said via Comicbook. “Chapter 1 tells cohesive stories that highlight love, compassion, and the innate goodness of the human spirit, all designed to minimize audience confusion and maximize audience engagement across platforms.”

Press received a first look at the animated series during a presentation today on the Warner Bros. lot. According to Comicbook, the series will feature a voice cast that will portray the live-action versions of the same characters. Gunn revealed he had written the first season consisting of seven episodes.

Comicbook reports the Creature Commandos were first featured in Weird War Tales issue #93 as a last resort outfit to take down Nazis during WWI. The non-human ensemble first consisted of monsters like a werewolf, a vampire, Frankenstein’s monster, and a gorgon. This iteration of the team will include a mix of humans and creatures alike.

Formed by Amanda Waller, most likely to be played by Viola Davis (The Woman King), the team will include The Suicide Squad’s Weasel, Nina Mazursky, Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, Rick Flag Sr., Doctor Phosphorus, and G.I. Robot.

Fans can expect to witness DC Studio’s Gods and Monsters: Chapter 1 to commence in 2025. View the announcement video from Gunn below.
