Action heroes continue to dominate the television landscape. The CW has renewed the martial arts action packed series Kung Fu for a second season, in addition to renewing the superhero series Stargirl for a third season, as reported by Entertainment Weekly.
Just premiering less than month ago on April 7, Kung Fu is an adaptation of the 1970s series of the same name. Starring Olivia Liang (Legacies) as Chinese-American Nicky Shein, she drops out of college after a quarter-life crisis, leaving San Fransisco to travel to an isolated monastery. When she returns home, she finds that her city has come under attack, with the Triads having taken over and posing a threat to her family and loved ones. She fights back with her martial arts training to protect San Fransisco in addition to seeking revenge on the assassin who murdered her mentor, Pei-Ling, portrayed by Vannesa Kai (New Amsterdam).
Stargirl stars Brec Bassinger (47 Meters Down: Uncaged) as Courtney Whitmore, a highschooler who moonlights as the superhero Stargirl. She, along with several of her classmates, including Yvette Monreal (Rambo: Last Blood) as Yolanda Montez/Wildcat II, Anjelika Washington (Tall Girl) as Beth Chapel/Doctor Mid-Nite II, and Cameron Gellman (20th Century Women) as Rick Tyler/Hourman II, form a new Justice Society of America and begin to fight the Injustice Society of America, their sworn enemies. Luke Wilson (The Royal Tenenbaums) also stars as Courtney’s step-father, Pat Dugan.
The CW President Mark Pedowitz announced both series’ renewal in a statement picked up by Entertainment Weekly: “We are beyond proud to continue to share the stories of Nicky Shen and Courtney Whitmore, two strong, powerful young women at the center of this new generation of hit shows for The CW in Kung Fu and DC’s Stargirl…While each boasts remarkable talent on both sides of the camera, Kung Fu and DC’s Stargirl have not only treated fans to some visually stunning action and high-flying heroics, but they also both strike very powerful emotional chords as they delve into the family dynamics and personal relationships at their core, and we are so excited to see what happens next.”
Kung Fu is currently in the middle of its first season, airing on The CW Wednesday nights at 8 p.m, E.T. Stargirl is preparing for its second season debut which will premiere on The CW Tuesday, August 10, at 8 p.m. E.T.
