According to lead actress Krysten Ritter, the infamous leather jacket has officially been hung out to dry. Following Disney’s plan to release their own streaming platform this September 2020, Disney+, all five Marvel-Netflix collaborations received the axe. Jessica Jones was the last to receive the news, in February of 2019 as opposed to October of 2018, but it was still cancelled ahead of its season 3 premiere. Now that all thirteen episodes of season three have dropped, as of June 14, 2019, and one end of Disney’s partnership with Netflix has expired.
Speaking with TVLine, via Bustle, Ritter says, “Do I think I’ll play her again? I don’t think so. [Because] I feel like I’ve played her, you know? I feel really good about it. I feel good about closing the door.” Someone who is may be less sure is the series’s showrunner, Melissa Rosenberg, who says, “I feel like this is a really complete, closed chapter.” However, she did hint, saying, “…never say never. But I feel ready to tell all new stories.”
And while some things may come to an end, that only means the beginnings of other things. Rosenberg is now working with Warner Brothers, where a different comic book-based cinematic universe can be found. And as for Ritter, she has a different kind of new beginning in store, a sidekick if you will.
While some of her Defenders co-stars, mostly the widely praised Daredevil cast, have said they would like to reprise their Marvel roles, this via TV Guide, they legally cannot appear in the same role for at least two years. Since the role was jointly created by Netflix and Disney, the character can not appear in any non-Netflix property until 2021.
Disney does plan to produce a Marvel Cinematic Universe Television end with a starting focus on Loki, Scarlet Witch, and Falcon, but the use of previously established characters is not entirely out of the question. Marvel Television executive Jeph Loeb had previously announced to fans that, “Our network partner may have decided they no longer want to continue telling the tales of these great characters. But [audiences] know Marvel better than that.”
