“Whether the Russians did or did not hack the voting of tonight’s SAG Awards, I look out on the million or probably even a million and a half people in this room and I say this award is legitimate and I won. I’m the winner. The winner is me. Landslide!”
So began Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ acceptance speech for best female actor in a comedy series at the SAG Awards Sunday. Satirizing President Donald Trump, the Veep leading lady addressed “the million or probably a million and a half” members of the audience regarding a new executive order which will prohibit travel from seven middle-eastern countries.
Louis-Dreyfus’ victory cemented her seventh overall SAG victory and her second during her run on HBO’s Veep. Beating out Ellie Kemper (The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), Jane Fonda (Grace and Frankie), Lily Tomlin (Grace and Frankie), and last year’s winner Uzo Aduba (Orange is the New Black). Louis-Dreyfus last won the award in 2014.
President Trump’s executive action spurred a great deal of distaste among the Hollywood elite and Louis-Dreyfus was happy to share her opinion on the matter. Following her tongue in cheek introduction, the actress settled into a “less insane tone” in stating her personal beliefs on what she considers “a blemish”.
“I want you all to know that I am the daughter of an immigrant. My father fled religious persecution in Nazi occupied France and, I am an American patriot. I love this country and, because I love this country, I am horrified by its blemishes. This immigrant ban is a blemish and it is un-American.”
She then read a statement made by the SAG’s “sister-guild”, the WGA, stating that she “completely agrees” with the remarks. Strong opinions are nothing new to Louis-Dreyfus. In addition to consistent support for Democratic presidential candidates since Al Gore in 2000, the starlet has been a strong proponent for environmental causes ranging from the Keystone XL pipeline to projects like Heal the Bay for which she has helped raise millions.
Louis-Dreyfus’ father, William Louis-Dreyfus, did in fact relocate to America from Paris with his then divorced mother in 1940 while his father, Pierre Louis-Dreyfus, served in the French Resistance. William Louis-Dreyfus would go on to have a net worth in the billions and serve as chairman of the board of Louis Dreyfus Energy Services.
With political disquiet resounding amongst all manner of performers, from the stage to the screen, it is no small wonder that Louis-Dreyfus would take the opportunity to express her disapproval with what she calls the “immigrant ban”. Other performers, including the cast of Stranger Things, also took a chance to speak up. While Louis-Dreyfus might have a powerful voice, she is certainly not the only one speaking up.
