Jenna Ortega Makes History With Emmy Nomination For ‘Wednesday’

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jenna Ortega (You) has made history with her 2023 Emmy nomination for Netflix’s Wednesday. Ortega is the second youngest lead actress to be nominated for a comedy series. Ortega is currently 20 years old, which is older than Patty Duke, who was nominated in  1964 for The Patty Duke Show at only 17 years of age. Originally Duke was nominated during a time before the Emmys split comedy and drama. At the time, the award was called Outstanding Continued Performance by an Actress in a Series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, if Ortega wins, she will have beaten America Ferrera as the youngest winner in the category. Ferrera won back in 2007 at the age of 23 for her role in Ugly Betty. She also became the first Latina actress to achieve recognition. Ortega has become a Gen Z staple across horror films as she has been in Scream and X. She continued this trend when starting on Wednesday, which, although it is more of a crime comedy, still embodies part of the horror genre.

Created by Alfred Gough (I am Number Four) and Miles Millar (Smallville), the series takes its spin on the spooky Addams family and focuses more on the daughter Wednesday Addams. Wednesday follows the story of Wednesday Addams and her years as a student. During the first season, she attempts to master her emerging psychic abilities while also thwarting a killing spree as well as solving a mystery involving her parents.

Other than Ortega the cast includes Hunter Doohan (Your Honor), Percy Hynes White (The Gifted), Emma Myers (A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder), Joy Sunday (Dear White People), Georgie Farmer (Of Wolves and Lambs), Christina Ricci (The Addams Family), Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones), Riki Lindhome (Knives Out), Jamie McShane (The Avengers), Naomi J. Ogawa (Assassin), Johnna Dias-Watson (A Pinch of Portugal), and many others.

Wednesday, season one, is available to stream on Netflix.
