Jenji Kohan’s Female Wrestling Comedy ‘G.L.O.W.’ Headed Straight-to-Series on Netflix

With series such as House of Cards serving as a harbinger of the success of straight-to-series production, many television networks are now bypassing pilots for direct-to-series orders. G.L.O.W., a 10-episode wrestling comedy executive-produced by Orange is the New Black showrunner Jenji Kohan and created by Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, has been picked up straight-to-series by Netflix. It was announced by IndieWire that Sydelle Noel (Captive) and Britney Young (Those Who Can’t) were cast as series regulars opposite Alison Brie and Marc Maron.

G.L.O.W. is inspired by the narrative of the 1980s female wrestling league of the same name – Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling – which was founded in response to the male-dominated World Wrestling Federation. The story is set in Los Angeles and is centered around Ruth (Brie), a struggling, workless actress who makes one last attempt to mend her shattered Hollywood dreams by immersing herself in the spandex-clad universe of women’s wrestling via a weekly series about female wrestlers.

Young will play Carmen Wade, “a big girl with big dreams and zero experience in front of a camera.” Noel is to play Cherry Bang, a professional stuntwoman seeking to make a name for herself, and whose career peaked during the prime of Blaxploitation.

G.L.O.W., the female version of WWF, was showcased before in the eponymous syndicated TV series, running for four seasons in 1985.
