A fifth season of Ted Lasso has not yet been confirmed, with series co-creator and star Jason Sudeikis (Saturday Night Live, Horrible Bosses, We’re the Millers) revealing that work on another season has not begun. According to ScreenRant, Sudeikis said he would like the Apple TV series to continue but that writers room for season five has not been started.
“We haven’t started a writers’ room or anything like that,” Sudeikis said during an appearance on the Talk Easy with Sam Fragoso podcast. He clarified that he was not intentionally withholding information about the show’s future and said he would assume the series could return if Apple TV and the cast are interested.
The update comes after Ted Lasso returned for its fourth season following a three-year hiatus. Season four concluded on Oct. 7 and followed Ted as he coached the Lady Greyhounds. Apple TV has not officially renewed or canceled the series for a fifth season.
Brendan Hunt (Key and Peele, Bless This Mess, Community), who co-created the series, serves as co-showrunner and stars as Coach Beard, has also discussed the possibility of continuing the show. Hunt said he is not aware of what discussions may be taking place but that the team had hoped the show’s return would extend beyond one additional season.
Season four introduced several new characters while continuing the stories of the show’s original ensemble. The finale saw Alice Chilton, played by Tanya Reynolds (Sex Education, The Decameron, Fanny Lye Deliver’d), become head manager of the Lady Greyhounds, while Ted transitioned to assistant manager to spend more time with his son.
The finale also featured developments for Rebecca Welton, played by Hannah Waddingham (Game of Thrones, The Fall Guy, Hocus Pocus 2), Roy Kent, played by Brett Goldstein (Shrinking, Thor: Love and Thunder, Uncle), and Keeley Jones, played by Juno Temple (Fargo, Atonement, Maleficent).
Despite the uncertainty surrounding season five, ScreenRant reports that Ted Lasso remained No. 1 on Apple TV’s global charts throughout the fourth season’s run and after its finale. Season four also currently holds a 90% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, according to the outlet.
Apple TV has not yet announced whether Ted Lasso will return for season five.
