According to ScreenRant, the DCU’s co-creative director James Gunn (Guardians of The Galaxy, Peacemaker, Scooby-Doo) was forced to address rumors about a prequel series starring reoccurring live-action anti-hero Harley Quinn, played by Margot Robbie (Barbie, The Wolf of Wall Street, Babylon). Rumors about Robbie returning to the cinematic universe with a new prequel series following the life of criminal psychiatrist, Dr. Harleen Quinzel, had been spinning the block online. Gunn finally responded to these rumors very abruptly on Twitter.
Peter Safran (Annabelle, Blue Beetle, The Starving Games) and Gunn announced a hard reset on the currently convoluted DC cinematic universe, with several unannounced recasts and revivals, releasing their first line of films and series in January. Gunn recently addressed the rumors of Robbie returning as the kick-ass clown in a very straightforward manner, when a Twitter post speculated on the return of Harley Quinn. Gunn quickly debunked the notion of the non-existent prequel series as well as other rumors as seen below:
Although Margot Robbie might not be returning as a headliner for her own series, the possibility of her reprising her role as a cameo is a lot more plausible. In their upcoming series Waller, Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder, The Woman King, Fences) stars as Amanda Waller the head of the secret government strike team Task Force X commonly known as the Suicide Squad. The Squad has had many iterations over the years, both live-action and animated, but almost always featuring Harley Quinn as the wildcard of the group. With Quinn playing such a big role in Waller’s career it seems likely that she’ll appear or at least be mentioned on the series.
Other possible integrations include HBO Max’s animated series Harley Quinn following the ,following the anti-hero’s love life of Quinn with her fan-favorite girlfriend, Poison Ivy. The Harley Quinn animated series is a rare commodity being a fan-beloved DC project with little to no criticisms, so it would make sense for Gunn to capitalize on its success. Creating a film or live-action version of the couple demonstrating a switch from a toxic relationship with the Joker, to a more stable but still chaotic romance with the princess of plant-life, would be a massive draw-in for adorning audiences.
Harley Quinn is one of DC’s most popular characters on par with Batman and Superman with the amount of appearances she makes in any DC related project, with popularity increasing exponentially. With the world famous Lady Gaga (A Star is Born, Top Gun: Maverick, House of Gucci) starring as Harley Quinn in the dramatized sequel of 2019 film Joker, Joker: Folie à Deux, Harley Quinn is only going to become more admired by the fanbase; making the possibility of Margot Robbie returning as Harley Quinn all the more likely for the foreseeable future.
