James Corden is now a two-time Emmy winner.
After the Late Late Show with James Corden won its first Emmy Award for Interactive Program on Saturday, it took home the award for Variety Special for the Carpool Karaoke special tonight. The show beat out Adele, Beyonce, and Amy Schumer, its competitors.
The show still is nominated for one more category – Best Variety Series – at the Primetime Emmy Awards this Sunday.
Corden’s Carpool Karaoke has become a cultural phenomenon with its guest stars such as Adele, First Lady Michelle Obama, and Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda. The segment is now on prime-time TV.
Backstage at the Creative Emmys, Ben Winston, Late Late Show executive producer, noted that the carpool karaoke idea was inspired by a project he and Corden did in England where they drove around with George Michael in a car. “Did we ever think it would be as big as it is…two people being idiots in a car? No.”
The producers said backstage that their dream guests on Carpool Karaoke would be the Rolling Stones. Considering the segment’s success, that dream doesn’t seem out of reach.
