Shailene Woodley does not want to play Divergent‘s Tris on TV anytime soon.
In an interview with Screen Rant while promoting Snowden, Woodley shared her thoughts on Lionsgate’s decision to make the final Divergent chapter a TV movie and spinoff series.
“Last I heard they were trying to make it into a television show,” said Woodley. “I didn’t sign up to be in a television show. Out of respect to the studio and everyone involved, they may have changed their mind and may be doing something different, but I’m not necessarily interested in doing a television show.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Woodley appeared on Monday’s episode of Today. When asked to clarify her recent Screen Rant comments and elaborate on her level of involvement in the series she said she would be very open to returning as Tris if Ascendant were a theatrically released feature film.
“They haven’t finalized any decisions, so it’s actually a moot point to talk about it now, out of respect to Lionsgate and everyone involved,” said Woodley. “I’m not exactly sure where they stand so we are kind of all in a limbo game. I signed up to tell the whole story of Tris, and I would love to be able to do that. Nothing would make me happier.”
Ascendant was originally set to be the fourth and final film in the Divergent franchise, and was slated for June 9, 2017 release. Development was halted after the third installment, Allegiant, performed poorly and only managed to rake in $66 million domestically.
Fellow Divergent franchise star Miles Teller spoke to The Hollywood Reporter at the NYC War Dogs premiere about the shift to television, and whether he would reprise his role as Peter in the franchise finale. “We’ll see. I honestly haven’t talked to anybody,” said Teller. “It caught us all by surprise. At this point, it’s a different set of circumstances. Things do change anytime they’re messing with something that was not the original intention. We all signed on for it in hopes that it’d be released in theaters, and we all had every intention of finishing [the franchise].”
Though he isn’t sure if he would return as Peter for the TV movie and spinoff series, Teller did have kind words to say about his experience as part of the Divergent franchise.
“I’m not kidding when I say that you won’t find a single actor who worked in that franchise who would have anything bad to say about that experience. It’s all good. I’ve got nothing but love for everybody I’ve worked with on that franchise.”
