Idris Elba Says there is a “Big Chance” for a Fifth Season of ‘Luther’

Idris Elba is having a spectacular year. Elba recently completed filming the The Dark Tower, the film adaptation of Stephen Kings fantasy-western novel of the same name, which stars Matthew McConaughey and Elba. He is prepping for the role of an aspiring professional kickboxer in new docu-series on Discovery Network, which will follow his “lifelong ambition” to fight professionally. Elba’s production company, Green Door Pictures, is also working on adapting Marc Olden’s trilogy Poe Must Die for film, following the fictional tale of Edgar Allen Poe’s battle with demonic forces. It’s hard to see any time for Elba to return to the character of Detective Chief Inspector John Luther, star of the critically acclaimed BBC One drama Luther. Elba however, still seems to have time to tease his fans. When asked on twitter whether fans would be getting a fifth season of Luther, Elba said there was a “big Chance.”

Luther premiered on BBC One back in the Summer of 2010 for a total of 6 one-hour long episodes. The series followed DCI John Luther on his return to active duty after he suffered a nervous breakdown following the capture of a serial murderer. In 2011 the show returned for another 4 episodes, and again in 2013. In 2014  BBC announced that Luther would be returning for a two part special.

Creator Neil Cross has stated that his inspiration for the series was a mix of the intellect from Sherlock Holmes and the inverted detective format of 1968 series Columbo. Elba has also previously stated that one of the main focuses for the series was to try and develop a film from it, which ties in to the shows format of a short season with lengthy episodes. With no word on whether or not BBC plans on making a movie to finish off the series, Elba’s teasing of a fifth season is definitely a step in the right direction.

Though there has been no official confirmation from BBC or creator Neil Cross, Elba’s word on the matter should not be disregarded. It is also unclear whether the show will consist of 4 episodes or continue on with its new two part format.
