As the entertainment and streaming world continues to evolve, consumers are seeing more and more changes to the way these platforms function. The Streamable has confirmed that Hulu is discontinuing its 30-day free trial for new customers, following its on-demand predecessors in rescinding trial offers.
While the announcement is not unprecedented, it is received with some caution, as this decision could be the biggest indication that the Hulu app (and our current understanding of the platform) is on its way to a new form under Disney and Disney+. Specifically, The Streamable confirmed that the 30-day free trial for new subscribers of its standalone ad-supported plan will be removed and unable to purchase again. However, consumers can still find free trials with Apple TV and Prime Video, as well as distributing a three-day free trial for Hulu + Live TV.
Critics are speculating that this decision is meant to bring uniformity to the Hulu-Disney+ dynamic, as Disney+ does not offer a free viewing period for new customers. Disney first achieved merging Hulu and its content into their catalogue in January of this year, with the goal of creating sustainable and extensive entertainment hub – which led to the first few reports of the Hulu app being restricted/discontinued with thoughts of a platform shutdown in a distant future. Content, as well as watch history and profile settings, were able to be merged together in the process. Although, this new development seems to indicate the direction where these events are leading, reports The Streamable.
As well, that distant future seems to have become closer than ever, as The Streamable reports that Disney does plan on shutting down the standalone Hulu app by the end of 2026. Hulu can still be purchased as a standalone subscription when the time comes, but people will have to watch and sign up for it through the Disney+ app.
