According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has officially canceled the Duffer brothers series The Boroughs after just one season. The series aired on the streamer less than a month ago and was a highly anticipated series.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that this is the first series for Matt (Hidden, Road To Moloch) and Ross Duffer (We All Fall Down, The Ground) after their iconic Netflix original, Stranger Things. Sources state that one of the reasons the series didn’t fare well is that the Duffers are taking their talents to Paramount.
“In a seemingly perfect retirement community, a grieving newcomer’s monstrous encounter inspires him to join a misfit crew of unlikely heroes who uncover a dark secret that proves their ‘golden years’ are more dangerous, and they are more formidable, than anyone expects,” the logline for The Boroughs reads via The Hollywood Reporter.
The series stars Alfred Molina (Rango, Not Without My Daughter), Geena Davis (The Fly, Stuart Little), Alfre Woodard (The Last Frontier, Holiday Heart), Denis O’Hare (Infinite Storm, The Pyramid), Clarke Peters (The Wire, Christmas Under the Stars), Bill Pullman (While You Were Sleeping, Spaceballs) and many others.
“In the sun-drenched expanse of the New Mexico desert lies The Boroughs, a picturesque retirement community promising its residents the time of their lives,” the official synopsis reads via The Hollywood Reporter. “But for new arrival Sam Cooper , paradise feels more like a prison. Everything changes when a terrifying nighttime encounter reveals that something monstrous is stalking the manicured cul-de-sacs. Dismissed by the powers that be as just another confused old man, Sam finds unlikely allies in a band of neighborhood misfits: a sharp-witted former journalist, a spiritual seeker, a cynical music manager, and a brilliant doctor running out of options. Overlooked and underestimated, these unlikely heroes must band together to unravel the dark truth at the heart of The Boroughs before their time runs out.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Boroughs ranked on Netflix’s weekly top 10 each week since its May 21 release. Last week, it was Number eight among all of the streamers’ English-language TV.
The Boroughs is available to stream on Netflix.
