‘HIMYM’ Spinoff Postponed As ‘This Is Us’ Writers Receive Promotions

This is a classic tale of good and bad news.

As previously reported, a new spinoff of How I Met Your Mother was being developed by Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger. The show was going to take on the flip-side of the classic 2000s narrative and show the mother’s point of view, and was to be titled How I Met Your Father. Aptaker and Berger were recruited by 20th TV to work on the spinoff, and the pair even penned a spec script for the occasion.

Here’s where the good and bad news comes into place: Aptaker and Berger are both writer-producers in the NBC darling This Is Us. Since the show has done phenomenally well and received widespread attention, Aptaker and Berger have also received praise for their work writing on it, including the iconic Thanksgiving episode and even worked with Dan Fogelman on the finale.

Now Deadline reports that the duo have finished a new overall deal with 20th Century Fox TV, where they will be credited as executive producers and co-showrunners with Fogelman, who created the series. Don Todd, who served as a show runner for season 1, will be leaving This Is Us.

News of a worthwhile promotion for two writers is always a good thing; however, it does put the How I Met Your Father project pushed even further into the background as Aptaker and Berger focus on their new duties to This Is Us.
