Deadline has reported in an exclusive that actress Helena Bonham Carter (Ocean’s 8, Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street) will no longer star in the upcoming fourth season of HBO’s The White Lotus. This announcement comes just over a week after production and filming had begun on the French Riviera setting.
HBO’s The White Lotus, written and directed by series creator Mike White (Enlightened, School of Rock), is a satirical dark anthology series that follows guests and staff over a week at various luxury global resort hotel locations part of the “White Lotus” chain. Prior season locations include Hawaii, Sicily, and Thailand. While glittering and gorgeous at first glance, each character with a tie to the White Lotus has a complex story to tell.
From Deadline, an HBO spokesperson provided a statement on her departure:
“With filming just underway on Season 4 of The White Lotus, it had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set. The role has subsequently been rethought, is being rewritten and will be recast in the coming weeks. HBO, the producers, and Mike White are saddened that they won’t get to work with her, but remain ardent fans and very much hope to work with the legendary actress on another project soon.”
Deadline remarked that this was a rare occasion for a recast for creative reasons, as White is very involved and particular about the casting process for The White Lotus; so as to find the best actors to embody his characters and vision. Carter had been the first pursued for season four and was the producers’ top choice for a curated starring role. However, as shooting began, White (writer and director for each episode) allegedly felt that her character as originally conceived was not what it should be. As a result, with the role reportedly central to the storyline of season four, it was decided to rework and recast.
Per Deadline, filming is still set to continue, albeit with an adjusted schedule to focus on the rest of the cast while White and HBO work on rewrites and getting a new actress on board. With the show’s entire cast in one location for the duration of the shoot, scheduling changes for The White Lotus are logistically easier to manage.
mxdwn has previously reported on The White Lotus, including two rounds of season four casting announcements and the news that production and filming had begun for the new season. Season four is written and directed by series creator White, and executive produced by David Bernad (Uncharted, Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat), Mark Kamine (American Hustle, Confess, Fletch), and White.
As detailed by Deadline, The “White Lotus” hotels featured for this season are the Hôtel Martinez as the White Lotus Cannes and the Airelles Château de la Messardière in Saint-Tropez as the White Lotus du Cap. Various filming locations include Monaco, St. Tropez, Cannes, and Paris, but the story itself will remain within the bounds of the Côte d’Azur. The story will also include the Cannes Film Festival, as it will take place in the area during the filming of the new installment in the series.
