HBO’s Run, from Vicky Jones (writer, Killing Eve; director, Fleabag) and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Solo: A Star Wars Story, Fleabag), has been cancelled after just one season, per The Hollywood Reporter. The show stars Merritt Wever (Signs; Marriage Story) and Domhnall Gleeson (Ex Machina, Anna Karenina) as Ruby Richardson and Billy Johnson, respectively.
As written on the official website for Run, the show “follows a woman (Wever) whose humdrum life is thrown upside down when she receives a text from her college sweetheart (Gleeson) inviting her to drop everything and meet him in New York to fulfill the pact they made 17 years previously.” The first season completes the main story arc of the first season, but leaves some loose ends to be picked up in a possible future season, which will unfortunately not be produced.
The first season, which premiered on May 24th, has seven episodes and can be streamed on both Hulu and HBO Max. You can watch the trailer for the first season here:
Jones and Waller-Bridge became renown as a duo from their work on both Fleabag and Killing Eve, both dark comedy series. In Fleabag, Waller-Bridge stars as the lead and Jones is a stage producer. In Killing Eve, Waller-Bridge is an executive producer and Jones is a writer.
Although Run is rated highly by critics, it could not impress other viewers. On Rotten Tomatoes the show has an 80 percent score from critics and 47 percent audience score. Despite the high ratings from critics, HBO executives were hesitant to continue with the show. In a statement made on Friday, HBO said, “After exploring potential ways of continuing Ruby and Billy’s journey, together with showrunner Vicky Jones, we have come to the decision that we will not be moving forward with a second season of Run” (The Hollywood Reporter).
