HBO President Says 4 Out Of 5 ‘Game Of Thrones’ Prequels Have Been Shelved

Fans hoping to have several prequel series fill the void when Game of Thrones inevitably wraps its unprecedented run are in for some not so pleasant news. Apparently only one of the series taking place before the events audiences are familiar with will be moving forward and is expected to start production in early 2019. As of right now all other prequel ideas are being shelved, most likely pending how successful the chosen one does.

At an event taking place at the Television Critics Association HBO President Casey Bloys was there to update everyone on several of the great programming HBO has in store for its viewers. While many of HBO’s programming slate came up, including the new addictive drama Sharp Objects, the powerhouse that is Game of Thrones was really what everyone was wanting to hear about. Bloys revealed that the only spinoff they will move forward with is the pilot project from writer and producer Jane Goldman.

“The development process was very positive,” said HBO President Casey Bloys. “Other people got busy, things didn’t come together … It’s fair to say we’re excited about this pilot, we’re hoping to shoot it in the first quarter of ’19, I don’t anticipate any movement on any other prequels until we [see what this one is].” So right now all other prequel series will have to wait until the results come in from Goldman’s project.

It was also revealed that the highly anticipated final season of Game of Thrones will air in the first half of 2019. This is great knowing that while fans are enjoying the conclusion to the epic live-action adaptation of the Song of Fire and Ice series, they’ll know that their next fix of Thrones is being brought to life at the same time. 2019 looks to be a game changing year for HBO and the Game of Thrones franchise.

The HBO series stars Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Jaime Lannister, Lena Headey as Cersei Lannister, Kit Harington as Jon Snow, Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen, Liam Cunningham as Ser Davos Seaworth, Carice van Houten as Melisandre, Rory McCann as Sandor “The Hound” Clegane, Maisie Williams as Arya Stark, Conleth Hill as Varys, Alfie Allen as Theon Greyjoy, John Bradley as Samwell Tarly, Gwendoline Christie as Brienne of Tarth, Kristofer Hivju as Tormund Giantsbane, Isaac Hempstead Wright as Bran Stark, Jerome Flynn as Bronn, Iain Glen as Jorah Mormont, Hannah Murray as Gilly.

Game of Thrones seasons can be watched on HBO NOW and new episodes will arrive in 2019.
