HBO Max Drops Trailer For ‘Velma’

HBO Max has released the trailer for the upcoming addition to the enormous Scooby Doo franchise Velma. The trailer comes only one day ahead of the show’s release.

The premise for the show, via HBO Max, is “an adult animated comedy series telling the origin story of Velma Dinkley, the unsung and underappreciated brains of the Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. gang. This original and humorous spin unmasks the complex and colorful past of one of America’s most beloved mystery solvers.”

The HBO original was created by Mindy Kaling (The Office, Inside Out) and Charlie Grandy, who was a writer for The Office and Saturday Night Live. Kaling also serves as the executive producer and voice for Velma. Her recent works — HBO Max’s The Sex Lives of College Girls and Netflix’s Never Have I Ever — as producer and creator have been commercial successes.

However, Velma has been met with backlash over the decision to give the protagonist a South Asian background. In an interview with Seth Meyers, per Deadline, Kaling addresses the hateful remarks: “When it was announced that I was going to do the voice of Velma, people were very supportive and happy on Twitter. And so I felt great. Then it was announced a month ago that the Velma character would be reimagined as South Asian. And people were not happy. There was a lot of, like, ‘So not Velma!’ Those kind of tweets. ‘Not the classic Velma that I’m always thinking about…’ If people freak out about that, I don’t care.”

The rest of the Scooby Doo gang will include Fred played by Glenn Howerton (The Mindy Project, How It Ends), Daphne played by Constance Wu (Crazy Rich Asians, The Hustlers), and Shaggy played by Sam Richardson (Hocus Pocus 2, HouseBroken). Because Velma is a prequel to the original animated series, the classic dog, Scooby-Doo, will not be present.

Velma will premiere on January 12, only on HBO Max. HBO Max also houses several shows and movies of the Scooby Doo franchise. The official trailer is available below.
