HBO Max has announced the debut of House of the Dragon: American Sign Language (ASL) ahead of the series’ upcoming third season premiere, according to Warner Bros. Discovery press release. The ASL version will stream alongside the new season as part of HBO Max’s continued accessibility efforts.
The fantasy drama stars Emma D’Arcy (Truth Seekers, Wanderlust) as Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen and Matt Smith (Doctor Who, The Crown) as Prince Daemon Targaryen. The series continues adapting George R.R. Martin’s (Game of Thrones, The Winds of Winter) Fire & Blood, focusing on the civil war within House Targaryen known as the Dance of the Dragons.
According to the press release, season one of House of the Dragon with ASL was performed by Landen Gonzales (Deaf West Theatre’s American Idiot, Spring Awakening stage productions). In contrast, season two was performed by Sophia Morales (Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice with ASL, Minecraft with ASL).
Gonzales and Morales will both return to perform ASL for the upcoming third season, with Justin Jackerson (Wuthering Heights with ASL, Little Shop of Horrors stage productions) serving as Director of ASL across all three seasons. Warner Bros. Discovery also stated that the debut continues expanding HBO Max’s growing ASL collection, which first launched with Barbie with ASL in 2023.
Season three of House of the Dragon is scheduled to premiere on June 21 on HBO Max. The upcoming season will continue directly after the events of season two and is expected to focus heavily on the escalating conflict between the Black and Green factions of House Targaryen.
mxdwn has previously covered HBO Max’s growing accessibility efforts through ASL programming. One earlier report focused on the platform releasing an ASL version of The Last of Us, highlighting how HBO continued expanding accessibility options across some of its largest original productions. That coverage emphasized the company’s broader push toward making major streaming releases more accessible to Deaf and hard-of-hearing audiences.
In recognition of Global Accessibility Awareness Day, the company confirmed that the full ASL collection will be featured prominently on the HBO Max homepage. The addition of an ASL version for House of the Dragon continues that direction, bringing one of HBO Max’s biggest fantasy series to a wider audience ahead of its next season.
