Game of Thrones fans might get to see one of Westeros’ most essential moments on screen for the first time. According to Variety, HBO has been having discussions about producing a new Game of Thrones prequel that will focus on Aegon The Conqueror.
According to Variety, the series is still in its early stages, and no writer has taken charge of the show. But, the search for the ideal writer is underway as HBO is keen to move forward and develop the new series. Sources via Variety also say this new project might not only be a TV show but might also include a feature film that would lead into the series. Though the plans could change any minute.
The prequel show would focus on the story of Aegon I Targaryen, also known as Aegon The Conqueror, and his sister-wives Rhaenys and Visenya. It will explore how they conquered six of the seven kingdoms of Westeros with their army and their three dragons, Balerion, Vhagar, and Meraxes. After the conquest, Aegon becomes the first king of Westeros and forges the Iron Throne with the swords of his fallen enemies and the help of his dragon. Aegon, Rhaenys, and Visenya are the start of the Targaryen Dynasty in Westeros. This historical event takes place around 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones and a hundred years before the events of House of the Dragon.
After the worldwide success of Game of Thrones, HBO has been trying to replicate it by producing more shows set in the incredible world created by George R. R. Martin (Dying of the Light, Dead Man’s Hand), the author of the book series that the show is based on.
At the moment, the only spinoff to come out has been House of the Dragon ,which proved to HBO that the fans still want to explore the stories of Westeros even after the fan backlash the last season of Thrones experienced.
The Aegon prequel joins other spinoff projects in the works at HBO including a sequel that would follow Jon Snow, who discovered in the last season that he is the last member of the House Targaryen.
The second season of House of the Dragon is still in production; the first season is available to stream on HBO Max. All seasons of Game of Thrones are also available to stream on HBO Max.
