HBO Announces New Sci-fi Series, ‘Spark’

HBO has announced the creations of a possible new science fiction series entitled Spark, which is currently in development, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Writing and executive producing the series, if it makes it to air, will be Karl Gajdusek. He has recently created and produced the series Last Resort which aired on ABC. The military thriller was canceled after just one season. Gajdusek also co-wrote the sci-fi adventure “Oblivion”, starring Tom Cruise.

Spark will be set in the near future, where the earth is enduring a technological/industrial revolution, according to Deadline. “It centers on the human reaction to a mystery still spiritually and technologically out of reach and follows a female protagonist as she works on the cusp of the Earth’s effort to discover the origin of the signal.”

The conceivable series promises to include the “five pillars of science fiction,” as defined by Gajdusek. These five elements are alien contact, artificial intelligence, technological breakthroughs, space exploration/adventure, and origin stories, as reported by Deadline.

HBO has recently proven to be extremely popular with their fantasy series Game of Thrones, and if Spark is picked up, will make an attempt to break into the science fiction genre.
