‘Hair Love’ Creator Matthew Cherry Signs First-Look Deal With Warner Bros. TV

Matthew Cherry (Hair Love) landed a major first-look deal with Warner Bros. Television, according to Variety. The deal spans across multiple years with Cherry developing and producing projects across many platforms.

Cherry is known for directing the Oscar-winning animated short Hair Love; it is about a father attempting to style his daughter’s hair for the very first time. The short was also adapted into a children’s book that features illustrations by Vashti Harrison. Before filmmaking, Cherry was an NFL wide receiver for the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Baltimore Ravens until 2007. He has since then directed several episodes of television including Black-ish, Mixed-ish, The Last O.G., and Whiskey Cavalier. He also directed the feature film The Last Fall, which debuted at SXSW in 2012 festival, and 9 Rides, shot entirely on an iPhone 6S. His work even extends to several music videos.

In the multi-year deal inked with Warner Bros. Television, Cherry will be actively developing comedies, dramas and event series. These projects will be appear on streaming services as well as basic cable networks and broadcast. No new information on his upcoming projects has been released, but they will be produced via his company Cherry Lane Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television, Warner Horizon Scripted Television, Warner Bros. Animation or Blue Ribbon Content depending on the platform. Terms of agreement were not disclosed.

In a statement reported by Deadline, Cherry said, “I am beyond excited to be joining the Warner Bros. Television family in this exciting new capacity. It’s an important time to be a Black creative working in this industry, and I look forward to creating impactful projects and partnering with other talented marginalized voices in our community.”
