Gugu Mbatha-Raw Cast In BBC Adaptation ‘The Girl Before,’ HBO Max Bidding To Co-Produce

The upcoming BBC television adaptation of The Girl Before has announced that Gugu Mbatha-Raw (The Morning Show) will join the series cast as its lead character in addition to HBO Max positioning themselves as a frontrunner to co-produce the series, according to Deadline. The series is an adaptation of the best-selling thriller novel under the same name by author JP Delaney (The Perfect Wife). The television adaptation is set to be a four-part series on BBC One and will be under the supervision of the United Kingdom production company 42. 

The Girl Before centers on Jane, who falls in love with a house until the discovery that the previous woman occupant years prior led to further trauma. Mbatha-Raw will join as this lead protagonist Jane. The actress has been a featured player in Apple TV+’s first drama series, The Morning Show, in addition to being cast in another Apple streaming series Surface, as well as starring in the upcoming Disney+ and Marvel series Loki. The news of the adaptation and casting follows the previous that saw Ron Howard (Rush) on board to direct an adaptation feature film of the novel, yet there is no word whether he is involved with the series nor if the film adaptation is still in the works.

Currently, the series is receiving production from 42 while they are currently shopping around for an American co-producer to distribute which is currently led by HBO Max, via Deadline. There are no other released details at this time revolving around the American acquisition for distribution except for the WarnerMedia streamer being considered the frontrunner. 

The BBC One television adaptation of The Girl Before does not have an expected premiere date.
