Gamora Variant to Get Full Episode in ‘What If…?’ Season Two

The season finale of Marvel’s What If…? launched on Wednesday with the Guardians of the Multiverse forming to save the infinite universes from a multiversal genocide at the hands of Ultron. One Guardian, a variant of Gamora that killed her adopted father Thanos, made a questionable appearance that left fans wondering what happened to her story.

According to Comicbook.comWhat If…? head writer A.C. Bradley assures fans that we will see this Gamora’s story play out in the second season of the animated series.

In the episode, titled “What If… The Watcher Broke His Oath?”, Uatuu (Jeffrey Wright) recruits various characters from the MCU multiverse to save the multiverse from Ultron, who makes it his mission to rid all of the multiverses of chaos after discovering it in the previous episode. With the help of Strange Supreme (the Doctor Strange variant from episode four, voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch), the Guardians of the Multiverse successfully defeat Ultron and save the multiverse.

In an exclusive interview with Comicbook.com, Bradley explains that Gamora’s appearance will act as a “prequel” to her story in the second season. When asked if we’ll see more of Gamora, Bradley told Comicbook.com, “We definitely will. What happened with the Gamora episode, there was originally supposed to be — early on in the season — a Tony and Gamora-centric episode. However, due to COVID and production delays, one of our amazing, amazing animation houses around the globe got hit pretty hard by the pandemic. And we were left with two choices: push the entire season to later this year, or push this one episode to Season 2. We made the choice to push that episode to Season 2, and hoped that seeing Gamora in the finale serves as a teaser for what is to come. In season two, it’ll almost be like a little bit of a prequel, we’ll see how Tony and Gamora became friends, because those two don’t even interact in the main MCU universe.”

What If…? is not the first Marvel Disney+ series to be shortened due to the pandemic. WandaVision was supposed to have one more episode than what was aired, but the final episodes of the series had to be re-edited due to complications with the COVID-19 virus.

“Given all the upheaval that we’ve been through in the past two years, pushing an episode is nothing, and we completely understand,” she continued to Comicbook.com. “Our animation houses have been absolute rock stars in pulling off this show.”

The Gamora episode is not the only episode that got pushed back to season two. Bradley confirmed that another comedic episode in the vein of the Party Thor episode was planned, but again due to the pandemic, the team could not make it happen. The Gamora episode was also said to have some comedic elements to it, given Tony Stark’s role in the episode.

What If…? can be streamed on Disney+.
