FX’s ‘The Strain’ Sets Premiere Date for Fourth Season

According to a report by Deadline, The Strain has officially set the premiere date for this summer season. The fourth and final season will premiere on FX on Sunday July 16 at 10 PM.
Season 4 will pick up where the last season left off, set nine months after the events of season 3.

The series has revolved around Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll), the head of the CDC’s New York-based Canary Project, who is called upon to investigate when an airplane lands with everybody on board dead, only to discover that there is viral outbreak with similarities to an ancient strain of vampirism. Eldritch Palmer, i.e.’The Master’ is an elderly billionaire who wants to gain immortality, is the primary villain of the show, and was assumed dead until the last minutes of the season three finale, when his remains were missing from his coffin.  At the finale of season 3, there was a global nuclear apocalypse, and the fourth season will pick up nearly a year following that event, which liberated the ‘strigoi’ (i.e. vampires), and allowed the Master to establish a totalitarian regime.

David Bradley, Jonathan Hyde, Kevin Durand, Ruta Gedmintas, Miguel Gomez, Richard Sammel, Max Charles and Rupert Penry-Jones also star.

The Strain was first pitched as a dramatic thriller series by Guillermo del Toro in 2006, but when Fox wanted to turn the series into a comedy, he took the idea elsewhere. A few months before his critically-acclaimed 2006 film Pan’s Labyrinth was released, Del Toro was introduced to Chuck Hogan who would agreed to co-write a trilogy novel series (Hogan would later go on to write the screenplay’s for Ben Affleck’s The Town and Michael Bay’s 13 Hours). Both Del Toro and Hogan would write the pilot episode for The Strain called “Night Zero”. After the first season premiered on FX on July 13, 2014, the series has gained a strong following. The series has mainly filmed in Toronto, Canada.

Carlton Cuse, most well-known for ABC’s Lost, USA’s Colony, and A&E’s Bates Motel, has served as the showrunner and executive producer for all four seasons. His next project will be a Jack Ryan tv series for Amazon, based on the film series which has featured stars such as Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck, and Chris Pine, each as the title character.

Make sure to tune in for the season 4 premiere on Sunday July 16.
