FX Report Counts 455 Original Scripted Series in 2016

More TV shows just keep on coming.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a recent study from FX has found that in 2016 original scripted series hit a record 455, which is up from 2015’s 421 series. Streaming services were responsible for a decent chunk of the increase, representing 93 original scripted shows and growing 1,450% from 2011.

FX President John Landgraf, who coined the popularized term “Peak TV”, has consistently stood by his position that scripted series show no signs of letting up in the near future, predicting as many as 500 original scripted series in 2017.

“I wrongly predicted that we’d hit the peak in 2015 or 2016,” Landgraf said at summer’s TCA’s. “It now seems clear that, at a minimum, the peak will be in calendar 2017 — and there is enough inertial momentum here that we could well see the growth trend carrying over into the 2018 calendar year.”
