Freeform Renews ‘Young & Hungry’, Cancels ‘Kevin From Work’

Freeform, the name that ABC Family changed to earlier this year, is wasting no time in renewing and canceling the shows on its schedule. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the popular show Young & Hungry has just been renewed for its fourth season, whereas Kevin From Work has been canceled after one season on the network. The cancellation was also reported on by The Hollywood Reporter.

Young & Hungry is the first show renewed under the Freeform name, while Kevin From Work is the first show canceled since the name change.

Young & Hungry stars Emily Osment as Gabi, a food blogger who is hired to be a personal chef for Josh (portrayed by Jonathan Sadowski) and the two end up having a one-night stand, even though he’s engaged at the time. Though Josh begins to develop feelings for Gabi, he pushes them aside so it’s not awkward at work.

The show is currently airing its third season on Freeform right now and the show’s renewal was announced on March 7. Production on the fourth season is expected to start soon and the fourth season’s premiere date has not been announced yet.

The show was created by David Holden and is executive produced by Ashley Tisdale, who guest starred in an episode.

Kevin From Work, which was canceled by Freeform on March 4, aired ten episodes in its first season. The show starred Noah Reid as Kevin, who was in love with one of his co-workers, Audrey (Paige Spara), who didn’t return his feelings.

Freeform was looking to get the show to stream on Netflix, as a way to increase viewership of the show should it be renewed for a second season. However, the talks fell through and the cast was released from their contracts. Soon after, Freeform canceled the show after its season one finale only had 120,000 viewers.

The show was created, written and executive produced by Barbie Adler, who worked on How I Met Your Mother. Aaron Kaplan, who worked on Chasing Life and currently works on Mysteries of Laura, also worked on the show.

Kevin From Work was an experiment for the network, as the show fit in with the new image it was trying to convey to viewers.

ABC Family announced in 2015 that it would be changing its name in order to better reflect the demographic that its shows were aiming for and they said Freeform would be the new name. The name change took effect on Jan. 12, 2016, the night fan-favorite drama Pretty Little Liars returned from hiatus and new show Shadowhunters premiered on the channel.
