Freddie Highmore to Star in ABC’s ‘The Good Doctor’

The young Norman Bates has booked his next gig for when he checks out of Bates Motel.

According to The Hollywood Reporter Freddie Highmore (Bates Motel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Spiderwick Chronicles) has been cast as the lead in The Good Doctor, an ABC medical drama pilot based on a South Korean series.

The Good Doctor, written and executive produced by David Shore (House, Law & Order, Sneaky Pete), focuses on brilliant, autistic young surgeon Dr. Shaun Murphy (Highmore) as he is hired into the pediatric surgical unit at San Jose Bonaventure Hospital. The series will explore how a person who has trouble accessing his emotions can relate to patients and save lives.

Highmore currently stars as Norman Bates on A&E’s hit Psycho prequel series Bates Motel. The series just premiered its fifth and final season, the last half of which will converge with Psycho (featuring Rihanna stepping in for Janet Leigh as Marion Crane). Bates Motel also stars Vera Farmiga, Max Thieriot, Olivia Cooke and Nestor Carbonell.

The Good Doctor is executive produced by Shore, Daniel Dae Kim, Sebastian Lee, David Kim, Erin Gunn and Lindsay Goffman.
