Fox Orders Lifeguard Drama ‘Rescue: HI-Surf’

According to a Deadline exclusive, John Wells Productions (JWP) is making a broadcast comeback with a new Hawaii lifeguard drama titled Rescue: HI-Surf, which has been given a direct-to-series order by Fox. Rescue: HI-Surf, which is expected to debut in the 2023-24 season, will be a collaboration between JWP and Fox Entertainment, with co-production support from Warner Bros. Television. In addition, Erin Jontow (Shameless, Animal Kingdom) also serves as an executive producer.

“Matt and I couldn’t be happier to partner with Fox on this exciting opportunity to bring the best lifeguards in the world to the attention of television audiences,” exclaimed Wells via Deadline.

According to TV FanaticRescue: HI-Surf is a thrilling drama that delves into the lives of the daring heavy-water lifeguards who safeguard the North Shore of O’ahu, a renowned and perilous coastline. The show will offer an intimate look into the personal and professional aspects of their lives. In each episode, viewers will witness these brave and devoted first responders putting their lives on the line to rescue those in perilous situations amidst the challenging and often treacherous conditions of Hawaii’s Seven Mile Miracle. Kester will be responsible for writing the debut episode, while Wells will direct the first two episodes of the series.

“I’ve lived on the North Shore of O‘ahu for most of my life, and these are our heroes, the most extraordinary extreme athletes anywhere,” Kester said via Deadline.

Rescue: HI-Surf brings an edge-of-your-seat style to the North Shore of Hawaii, where lifeguards and surfers collide with visceral rescues, great character drama, and all-around fun,” explained the President of Scripted Programming at Fox Entertainment in a statement via PopCulture. “This new franchise is pure beachfront property for Fox, especially with the powerful auspices of John, Matt, and our incredible partners at Warner Bros.”

Fox executives were so impressed with Kester’s pilot script that they gave a full-order series for Rescue: HI-Surf, according to PopCulture. The show is the second scripted series and the fifth series overall that Fox has picked up for the upcoming season.
