Fox Greenlit Remake Of 1980s Series ‘Highway to Heaven’

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox, before announcing its lineup for the 2026-2027 season, announced it has greenlit a remake of the 1980s series Highway to Heaven. Fox Entertainment Studios will produce and own the series, with Amblin Television and Michael Landon (Bonanza, I Was a Teenage Werewolf) Productions also involved. The original series aired from 1984 89 on NBC and starred Landon.

As per  The Hollywood Reporter, Jason Katims (Friday Night Lights, Parenthood) will be the showrunner on the new series, which will follow a “probationary angel” who came to Earth to gain their wings by helping people in need, just like the original series.

“I’m excited by the challenge of putting a contemporary lens on this classic tale,” Katims said in a statement via The Hollywood Reporter. “The idea of telling a very grounded, human story about an angel feels immediately emotional to me — and fun. I love going outside my comfort zone to tell a tale about someone trying to do better as an angel than he did as a man.”

According to The Hollywood ReporterHighway to Heaven is the second series Fox has greenlit for the 2027-28 season. Stewie, Family Guy spinoff centered on the youngest member of the animated series is in the works.

Highway to Heaven has always been about connection, compassion and the idea that small acts can have big ripple effects and make a lasting difference,” said Cindy Landon (Sanctuary, Big Rock Burning), Michael Landon’s widow and an executive producer of the new series, via The Hollywood Reporter. “I’m proud to help carry Michael’s legacy forward with partners like Fox and Amblin, who understand the heart of this series and are bringing it to a new generation at just the right moment.”

Added Fox Television Network president Michael Thorn via The Hollywood Reporter, “With the incredible pairing of Jason Katims, Cindy Landon, and the Amblin team, we’re building on Highway to Heaven’s timeless legacy of transformation and optimism in a way that feels deeply relevant and relatable to our audience.”
