First Footage of Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II Surfaces in ‘The Crown’ Season 3 Teaser Trailer

A new teaser trailer has been released for Season 3 of The Crown. This features the first footage of Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II. Colman will be taking over the part, which was previously played by Claire Foy, given that the Queen is now in her mid-40s on the show. Foy herself is only 35. Colman is 45.

This is not Colman’s first time playing royalty, as the actress took home an Oscar for her portrayal of Queen Anne in The Favourite.

The teaser shows her in a meeting with a group of what appears to be advisors as they review the Queen’s updated stamp.

“Everyone is delighted with the new profile, ma’am, which they feel to be an elegant reflection of Her Majesty’s transition from young woman to…” one advisor began.

“Old bat?” The Queen jumped in to finish his sentence.

This exchange eludes to the era of change that The Crown will tackle with its third season. The 1960s and 70s will bring the Cold War panic and space-age into the show’s narrative.

“A great many changes. Nothing one can do about it, one just has to get on with it,” the Queen said at last.

Olivia Colman will also appear in the role for season four, as the show has already been renewed for its next season. Helena Bonham Carter will play Princess Margaret; Tobias Menzies will play the Duke of Edinburgh; Josh O’Connor will play Prince Charles; Erin Doherty will play Princess Anne; Ben Daniels will play Lord Snowdon; Jason Watkins will play Prime Minister Harold Wilson, and Charles Dance will assume the role of Lord Mountbatten.

Since its debut in November 2016, The Crown has faired extremely well critically. It has an average 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and Ben Travers of IndieWire praised it in a review: “Netflix’s lavish production ticks all the boxes of a royal awards contender: impeccable craftsmanship, sterling performances and a historical story. But all that polish may have dulled its edge.”

Season 3 of The Crown will be available for streaming on Netflix starting on November 17. Watch the teaser trailer below.
