Disney+’s ‘Ms. Marvel’ Series Set to Film in 2020

Disney+’s upcoming Ms. Marvel series adaptation will began production by September of 2020—  casting for the series recently just commenced as well with outlets confirming the network will be looking at young women between the ages of 16-24 to play the title character.

Reports have also confirmed only up and coming actresses will be chosen and considered for the titular role of Ms. Marvel, with Bisha K. Ali the series’ showrunner who is primarily known for writing on Hulu’s Four Weddings and a Funeral.

Always the trendsetter, Disney has also decided to develop the series based on Ms. Marvel’s second iteration, Kamala Khan, instead of the original character of Carol Danvers— a serious step in inclusive diversity in the current live-action Marvel Universe. Originally published in 2013, Khan’s character became the first Muslim Marvel character to headline their own comic book title of the same name.

A Pakistani-American teenager from Jersey City, Khan has shape-shifting abilities which she discovers through her Inhuman genes in the aftermath of Marvel’s “Inhumanity” story line. After her childhood idol, Carol Danvers, becomes Captain Marvel, she assumes the mantle of Ms. Marvel after gaining Danvers’ blessing. Khan’s superhero announcement also won the superhero publication the Hugo Award for best graphic story in 2015.

With a large part of the comics’ premises following Khan as she tries to find herself, audiences can expect to see Disney+’s upcoming adaptation to do same. Another major focus of the stories see her powers take on polymorphous abilities—the ability to stretch and change shape.

The original announcement was made at the D23 Expo alongside news for: The Falcon and the Winter Solider, WandaVision, She-Hulk, and an upcoming Moon Knight series. Disney’s other nascent animated series, What If?, was also teased during the production company’s panel, with some Marvel fans barely being able to contain their excitement.
