Cameras have allegedly started rolling on the set of the much-discussed Paramount Plus iCarly sequel series, as reported by Deadline. Barring any unforeseen incidents, the show will arrive on the ViacomCBS streaming platform in the summer of 2021, Deadline reports. As of late January, the only cast members whose involvement could be publicly confirmed were those who were reprising their roles from the original Nickelodeon sitcom being revived– series lead Miranda Cosgrove (Crowded, School of Rock) and supporting actors Nathan Kress (Star Wars Rebels, Video Game High School) and Jerry Trainor (Evolution, Still the King), via Deadline.
During Nickelodeon’s virtual upfront presentation on March 18, producers were able to reveal two additional cast members. Jaidyn Triplett (The Affair, Black-ish) reportedly plays Millicent, the snarky stepdaughter of Freddie Benson (Kress), and improv comedian/podcaster Laci Mosley (Scam Goddess, Florida Girls) stars as Carly Shay’s (Cosgrove) roommate and confidante Harper, according to Deadline.
Mosley took to her Twitter to express her enthusiasm about the project, where she was greeted by many well-wisher, namely Franchesca Ramsey (Yearly Departed, Superstore), who works as a writer and producer on the iCarly revival.
The friendly relationship between Carly and Harper suggests that Harper’s role in the revival will not be all that dissimilar from that of Sam Puckett in the original show, as portrayed by Jennette McCurdy (Between, What’s Next for Sarah?). McCurdy announced her formal retirement from acting in February 2021 in an episode of her podcast Empty Inside where she interviewed Anna Faris (Overboard, Movie 43) in the wake of the latter’s resignation from the CBS family sitcom Mom, which is nearing the end of its on-air run. “I’m so ashamed of the parts I’ve done in the past… I resent my career, in a lot of ways. I feel so unfulfilled by the roles that I’ve played,” McCurdy confessed to Faris during the recording. You can listen to their complete discussion below:
Also absent from the revival is iCarly creator Dan Schneider (Zoey 101, Game Shakers). Nickelodeon allegedly cut ties with the writer in 2018 following allegations of abusive workplace behavior, as reported by Deadline. The revival additionally lost co-executive producer Jay Kogen (Punky Brewster, The Simpsons), who exited the project in February, allegedly after clashing creatively with Cosgrove, who is credited as an executive producer on the program, Deadline reports. Kogen had previously worked on the popular Nickelodeon series Henry Danger, created by Schneider. In light of Kogen’s departure from the iCarly sequel series, showrunner duties were bestowed exclusively upon executive producer Ali Schouten (All Night, Young & Hungry), who authored the revival’s pilot episode, according to Deadline.
