Eva Longoria to Develop Series Based on Carlos Hernandez’s ‘Sal & Gabi Break the Universe’ at Disney

Eva Longoria (Desperate Housewives) and Ben Specter (Grand Hotel) will be developing a series based on Carlos Hernandez’s novel, Sal & Gabi Break the Universe, via Deadline. The series is the product of a deal between UnbeliEVAble Entertainment and Disney Branded Television.

Sal & Gabi Break the Universe sets around Sal Vidón, a teenager who gains the ability to retrieve items from various timelines and universes after meddling with his father’s experiment. With the help of his friend, Gabi, the two set out on a quest to find and bring back Sal’s late mother, only to learn that tampering with another universe ultimately hurts theirs.

The story is described as a science fiction story that blends in Cuban mythology. The original novel was met with high reviews upon its release in 2019. Hernandez (The Forgetting Machine) also won the Pura Belpré Award for the novel.

“It’s exciting to work with Eva and Ben on such an imaginative story full of heart and adventure that truly feels authentic in its storytelling and representation of characters,” Ayo Davis, EVP of Creative Development and Strategy at Disney Branded Television, told Deadline. “Carlos Hernandez’s heartwarming and humorous book is the perfect addition to our slate of development and is in expert hands with Eva and Ben’s production team.”

A release date for Sal & Gabi Break the Universe was not confirmed, neither has a network been confirmed for the series.
