Elizabeth Olsen Teases a ‘WandaVision’ Cameo, Provoking Memes and Speculation Online

A recent interview with TVLine sent Marvel Cinematic Universe fans into social media stir on Tuesday, when Elizabeth Olsen (Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity War) teased an upcoming WandaVision cameo that she’s surprised hasn’t leaked. “I’m very excited,” Olsen told TVLine about the mysterious guest appearance. As the upcoming appearance started to get equated with The Mandalorian’s Luke Skywalker cameo online, both serious and comedic speculations began to pour in from fans of Disney+’s first MCU television series.

“It sounds like WandaVision‘s mystery performer could be a familiar MCU actor,” ScreenRant posited from Olsen’s interview. ScreenRant likewise referred to allusions that Olsen’s co-star Paul Bettany has made in several interviews regarding an unnamed performer who he said he was excited to get a chance to work with on WandaVision.

With Kat Dennings (Two Broke Girls, Thor) and Randall Park (Fresh Off the Boat, Always Be My Maybe) reprising their roles as Thor’s Darcy Lewis and Ant-Man’s Jimmy Woo, respectively, MCU fans have already been given plenty of exciting in-universe connections in WandaVision. The series has likewise introduced an adult Monica Rambeau, played by Teyonah Parris (Dear White People, Mad Men), tying into Captain Marvel. However, Olsen’s interview indicates that there’s at least one more cameo to be expected in WandaVision‘s coming episodes.

One appearance that WandaVision viewers know to expect in coming episodes is Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock, Doctor Strange) as Doctor Strange, as WandaVision is meant to tie directly into Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness and there has already been speculation that Emma Caulfield Ford’s (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Timer) Dottie could be Clea, the daughter of Dormammu (among other speculations about her character). Since Vision has seemingly returned to the land-of-the-living, one working theory as to who may appear, in addition to Doctor Strange, is another deceased figure from Wanda Maximoff’s past such as Tony Stark or her brother Pietro Maximoff, also known as Quicksilver.

As each episode of WandaVision brings new Easter Eggs and fan theories, characters such as Agatha Harkness, The Grim Reaper and Mephisto have been speculated to be lurking behind the unsuspecting facades of Westview. Along these lines, some fans have predicted the cameo to which Olsen referred may be of Marvel Comics character not yet introduced into the MCU. Since Marvel Studios now has the rights to more characters from the comics and have been folding-in actors from other properties to continue their roles, such as Charlie Cox (Daredevil, Boardwalk Empire) reprising the role of Daredevil for Spider-Man 3, some have gone as far as to speculate that Sir Ian McKellen (The Lord of the Rings: The fellowship of the Ring, X-Men) himself could arrive in Westview. McKellen played the role of Wanda Maximoff’s father Magneto in Sony’s X-Men franchise, with the rights to these characters previously at separate studios the father-daughter duo have yet to appear together on-screen.

Serious speculation aside, some turned this WandaVision guessing game into a meme, flooding social media with goofy predictions. As WandaVision’s tour through the sitcom tropes of each decade approaches the ‘90s, many fans joked the an appearance from Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen (Full House, New York Minute) might be fitting cameo. The WandaVision star’s twin sisters starred in Full House in the 90s, and Olsen herself referenced feeling a sense of nostalgia while filming the upcoming ‘90s episode of WandaVision for that reason, via Entertainment Weekly.

Other joke suggestions included minor MCU characters such as Howard the Duck, Peter Parker’s teacher Mr. Harrington, director Joe Russo’s character from Avengers: End Game and actress Ashley Johnson’s (Critical Role, The Last of Us) unnamed bystander character from the first Avengers film. Continuing with the meme, fans online threw a bunch of comical contenders into the ring including Kermit the Frog, Batman, Osmosis Jones, The Doctor from Doctor Who and, of course, themselves.

Fans will have to tune into Disney+ on Fridays in February to see just what further surprises and cameos WandaVision has up its magical sleeves. The streaming service has already released sneak preview ahead of this Friday’s fifth episode.
