‘El Chapo’ Series Finds Its ‘El Chapo’

Univision and Netflix have been coming together in the last few months to bring viewers into the sensational life of a real-time criminal. El Chapo follow the story of the man Joaquín Guzmán, a cunning drug lord known for his deals and for his prison escapes. And now Variety reports that we have a new fictional face to put to the iconic nickname: Marco de la O.

Marco de la O has had a history in Hispanic television, and is most known for his roles in Tanto Amor and Maldita Tentacion. With his new role as an international drug lord, Marco de la O must show the intricacies and depths that go into living the lawless life. El Chapo takes place over thirty years, marking the ups and downs of his drug trafficking career.

Silvana Aguirre Zegarra created the series, and is produced by Daniel Posada. This is the first clear collaboration between Netflix and Univision Communication’s Story House Entertainment, and while the show will be featured on Netflix, El Chapo will first premiere on the U.S. Univision; only then will Netflix gain the first-run rights for the rest of the world’s consumption of the show.

El Chapo also stars Humberto Busto as “Don Sol,” Juan Carlos Olivas as El Güero, and Alejandra Aguilar as Toño. The show is set to premiere on April 23, and Univision released a teaser trailer, which you can watch below:
