According to Variety, the production on the Live Action adaptation of the hit Disney animated series Gargoyles (1994-1997) has been cancelled. It was still in early development for Disney.
The original series took place in 1994 to 1997. The story follows a race of gargoyle warriors who once roamed centuries before as mankind’s protection of evil but have been now cursed to be stone statutes during the day and alive at night. The heroic gargoyle hero, Goliath, is free from the curse to experience modern-day New York and try solving supernatural crime related to his past that will help protect the city. Airing for three seasons, the series followed the concept of dark fantasy and mystery mixed in modernity while focusing similar morality in characters like other dark heroic animation shows, such as Batman: Animated Series (1992-1995). It also had a film adaptation called Gargoyles the Movie: The Heroes Awaken (1995), which was a five-episode pilot for the television show.
One of the Mouse House’s most gothic shows they released for Walt Disney Television Animation. It had a full voice cast of characters, including Keith David (Hazbin Hotel, Rick and Morty) as Goliath, Ed Asner (Spider-Man: Animated series, The Boondocks) as Hudson, Tim Curry (The Wild Thornberrys, FernGully) as Dr. Anton Sevarius, and Jeff Bennet (Animaniacs, Batman: Caped Crusader) as Brooklyn.
There have been many rumors of the writers and executive producers Gary Dauberman (It, Annabelle) and James Wan (The Nun, The Conjuring) developing the series on Disney+ since 2023. Many of the plans for the adaptation were focused on keeping attentive care towards the gothic originality from the animation series and creating more to the narrative in the reboot.
However, Greg Weisman (The Spectacular Spider-Man), the co-creator of the original series, has revealed in an interview the project wasn’t going through anymore. According to Variety, Weisman’s involvement with any plans for a live action was not precise in his interview– nor in any involvement with a possible sequel animation series to the original— but his statement on the cancellation was accurate. Since the end of the series, there have been conversation on a remake for years. Now it seems the series will have to remain unfinished.
