Disney+ Renews ‘Diary of a Future President’ for a Second Season

The future of this family-comedy could not be more bright. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin) produced Diary of a Future President has been renewed by Disney+ for a sophomore season.

Diary of a Future President follows Elena Canero-Reed, a 12-year-old girl, who, as the title hints, will become a future president of the United States. The coming-to-age story focuses on Elena’s adolescent struggles through middle school and her status as a Cuban-American. Although Rodriguez is a producer and plays “adult Elena” on the show, she shares creative-control of the series with executive producers and showrunners Ilana Peña (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend), Keith Heisler (Fresh off the Boat) and Molly Breeskin (Safety Not Guaranteed).

The series has drawn critical acclaim with its first season holding a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Nick Allen, of RogerEbert.com, writes: the shows tackles all issues “with a wit and sincerity that simply comes from thoughtful writing, a trait that is apparent in each of the first five episodes.”

Agnes Chu, the senior vice president at Disney+, agrees with the critics. He states that “Optimistic, heartfelt stories that inspire are fundamental to our content and creator Ilana Peña’s series delivers on these attributes in spades […] Families around the world have fallen in love with Elena and the Cañero-Reed family and we are thrilled to bring Elena’s often hilarious and always meaningful journey through adolescence back for another season. It has been wonderful to partner with the extraordinary Gina Rodriguez to champion specific, diverse points-of-view and we look forward to seeing even more of President Cañero-Reed in this next chapter,” as quoted in The Hollywood Reporter.

With the renewal of this series and other self-produced content such as The Mandalorian, numerous Marvel spin-offs, and the up-coming Lizzy McGuire reboot, it is becoming clear that Disney+ is not only voting on …A Future President, but also on unique scripted content as a foundation of their streaming model.
