Disney+ Chooses To Not Move Forward With ‘The Spiderwick Chronicles’ Despite The Series Being Completed

According to Deadline, Disney+ has chosen not to air the already completed series The Spiderwick Chronicles on their platform. This series was an adaption from The Spiderwick Chronicles book franchise by authors Holly Black (Stolen Heir, The Cruel Prince) and Tony DiTerlizzi (A Hero for WondLa, Kenny & the Dragon). The first novel of the book series was published in 2003.

Deadline notes that this cancellation is coming from Disney’s plan to reduce programming costs, which was announced earlier this summer.

The Chief Financial Officer of Disney Christine McCarthy spoke about this change when it was first announced. According to Deadline, McCarthy stated, “We are in the process of reviewing the content on our DTC services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation. As a result, we will be removing certain content from our streaming platforms, and currently expect to take an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 to $1.8 billion.”

As The Hollywood Reporter notes, around thirty shows have been removed from Disney+ and Hulu thus far.

The television series The Spiderwick Chronicles was first announced in November of 2021. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney labeled the series as “a modern coming-of-age story combined with fantasy adventure.” The series was created by Paramount Television Studios and 20th Television, which are both a part of The Walt Disney Company.

The Spiderwick Chronicles consists of six episodes. The series revolves around the Grace family whose lives change when they move into the Spiderwick Estate. They uncover long-standing family secrets and explore a magical realm together.

Stars of the series include Christian Slater  (Heathers, True Romance) as Mulgarath, Lyon Daniels (Patriot, We Can Be Heroes) as Jared Grace, Noah Cottrell (Saturdays, The Chosen) as Simon Grace, Mychala Lee(Relish, Truth Be Told) as Mallory Grace, Joy Bryant (Honey, London) as Helen Grace, and more.

Although Disney will not be moving forward with The Spiderwick Chronicles, The Hollywood Reporter notes that the company is looking for other buyers.
