Disney Announces Slate Of New Content, Includes 20 ‘Star Wars’ & Marvel TV Series

Disney flooded Twitter’s trending topics during their Disney Investors Day presentation. According to Deadline, the media company announced an array of new content from its flagship properties during an almost four-hour virtual event. The titles included 20 new TV series from the Star Wars and Marvel universes. They also plan on developing 15 original series across live-action, animation, and Pixar.

According to Deadline, the titles will be released within the next few years and include some long-rumored projects. While details were kept to a minimum, a few specific titles were announced. From the Star Wars umbrella, fans can look forward to Diego Luna’s Andor, a prequel series that sees Luna reprise Cassian Andor from the spinoff film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. They also announced a female-focused series helmed by Leslye Headland and the Obi-Wan Kenobi drama series with Ewan McGregor reprising his film role.

“We are prioritizing our DTC platforms,” Kareem Daniel, Chairman, Media and Entertainment Distribution said via Deadline. This includes the occasional same-day releases across platforms. They also are prepping fifteen original features exclusively for the Disney+ streaming platform. “Today you will see this new strategy reflected,” Daniel said, via Deadline.

New to his position, Daniel explained how Disney’s recent restructuring laid the groundwork for their current strategy. According to Deadline, the focus is on prioritizing content in a direct-to-consumer practice. Many of Disney’s competitors, including AT&T’s WarnerMedia and Comcast’s NBCUniversal, are enacting the same practices.

According to Deadline, Daniel described the shift in management as a way to “allocate creative budgets across platforms to maximize engagement and impact.” Under this new managerial setup, all teams will work to prepare content across linear, theatrical, and streaming releases with some even same-day launches.

“With these Disney+ originals, along with theatrical releases and library titles, we will be adding something new to the service every week,” Daniel said, via Deadline.
