Actress and pop star Demi Lovato’s (Camp Rock) comedy pilot about an eating disorder support group has received a series order from NBC, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Lovato will star in and executive produce the single camera comedy, titled Hungry.
The series, first revealed in January, will follow “friends who belong to food issues group and help each other as they look for love, success and the perfect thing in the fridge that’s going to make it all better,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Lovato, herself, has openly spoken about her own issues with eating disorders and food issues broadly. Since she was eight years old, Lovato has had what she called “a really unhealthy relationship with food,” according to a 2011 interview with ABC News. During a tour for Disney Channel musical Camp Rock 2, Lovato said she “was performing concerts on an empty stomach” and “losing her voice from purging.”
Hungry will serve as Lovato’s first series regular role since Disney Channel’s 2009 series Sonny with a Chance.
In addition to Lovato, Suzanne Martin of Will & Grace writing fame will work on the series, serving as writer and executive producer. Sean Hayes (Will & Grace), Todd Milliner (Grimm, producer) and Scooter Braun, Scott Manson and James Shin, the three of whom produced on rapper Lil Dicky’s FX show Dave, will also executive produce.
Hungry is the second mental health-themed series to be ordered by NBC with Peacock, NBC’s streamer, recently ordering the drama Expiration Date, in which Will Forte (The Last Man on Earth) stars as “a man who wants to commit suicide,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
