‘Creepshow’ Adapting Stephen King’s Unsettling ‘Survivor Type’ Story

According to a report from Production Weekly (via Geektyrant), Shudder’s Creepshow anthology TV series will be adapting Stephen King’s unsettling short story Survivor Type from his 1985 collection Skeleton Crew. King is serving as a producer on the upcoming series alongside his son Joe Hill — a best-selling author in his own right — and Walking Dead makeup-wizard and episodic director Greg Nicotero. King produced and appeared as an actor in the original 1982 Creepshow movie, of course. He played a country buffoon who becomes infected with an odd alien virus after touching a meteor.

The original movie was directed by George Romero, and would go on to become regarded as a classic horror film in its own right with a cult following. The new series from Nicotero, King and company will carry on the anthological tradition and will now include an adaptation of Survivor Type in its six-episode schedule. Published in 1982 in the horror anthology Terrors, King’s work involved a surgeon named Richard Pine who survives a plane crash only to find himself stranded on a desert island. Over the course of the story, the surgeon endures the extreme lengths of survival, including amputating his own limbs and eating them in what is a vividly horrific picture.

Given the story’s extreme power and its potent iconography, the Survivor Type story stands as one of the rare gems of King’s massive short story collection and it will serve as what will presumably be one of the premiere episodes in this upcoming series. The release date has yet to been announced, but its fair to presume that Creepshow will be launching itself within the next year.
