CNN Films Announces “Sole Survivor” Documentary About Aviation Disaster Survivors

Sole Survivor, a feature-length documentary by Ky Dickens about sole survivors of airplane crashes, has been acquired by CNN Films, announced Indiewire.

The documentary’s world premiere will be seen today, July 27 at the Traverse City Film Festival. CNN described the film, written and directed by Ky Dickens, in a press release saying it examines “the complicated emotional aftermath of survivors following commercial aviation disasters.” CNN states there have been just 14 sole survivors since the beginning of commercial aviation.

CNN notes the documentary will center on survivor George Lamson, Jr. and his “journey.” He survived a plane crash as a teenager and continues to wonder why. In the film he says, “During the course of my life…I have been curious to know, what makes a person heal? People don’t understand. It never goes away. It’s something that stays with you for the rest of your life.” On his journey, Lamson searches for answers within the other 13 other sole survivors.

The press release went on to note writer/director Dickens has experienced survivor guilt, as she was a survivor in a car wreck that took the life of her friend. She noted, “Survivors are often considered lucky and the rescue is often considered the end to their story…but the complexity of true survival is where our film–and the questions that it poses–begins.”

Amy Entelis, senior vice president for talent and content development for CNN Worldwide, is excited about the announcement, having said, “We are delighted about Sole Survivor as our latest CNN Films acquisition…we think the universal life questions explored in this film will resonate with our viewers – who will learn that there was so much more to these stories.”

The documentary will be released in theaters in 2014 and soon after premiere on the CNN network.
