According to Comicbook.com, NBC has announced a significant change in the leadership of its popular medical drama, Chicago Med. Starting with the upcoming tenth season, Allen MacDonald (CSI, Body Of Proof, 13 Reasons Why) will take on the role of showrunner, bringing fresh vision and experience to the series. The transition comes as long-time co-showrunners Diane Frolov (Dangerous Minds, Easy Money, The Chris Isaak Show) and Andy Schneider (Northern Exposure, The Sopranos, Magnum P.I) announced their departure from Chicago Med at the end of the ninth season.
Their decision to leave marks the end of a significant era for the series, “We were honored to be chosen by Dick Wolf to run Chicago Med and have tremendously enjoyed our association with Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television,” Frolov and Schneider said in a joint statement, via Comicbook.com. “We love Chicago Med and have devoted all our creative energies to it, but after nine seasons we feel it’s time for us to move on and explore other possibilities. We’ve been privileged to work with a great writing staff, production team and a brilliant cast of actors. We will miss them all.”
As per Comicbook.com, creator and executive producer Dick Wolf (Law And Order: SVU, FBI, Chicago PD) expressed his gratitude for Frolov and Schneider’s contributions. He said, “We’re grateful to Diane and Andy for nine fabulous seasons of Chicago Med,” Wolf said. “They helped us give NBC a No. One bonafide hit for almost a decade.”
According to Comicbook.com, the showrunner change is part of a series of significant shifts for Chicago Med” Season eight saw the departure of several key cast members, including Guy Lockard (The Village, Steve, Jake), Asjha Cooper (Black As Night, All American, Everybody Wants Some), and original series stars Brian Tee (The Wolverine, Jurassic World, Expats) and Nick Gehlfuss (Shameless, Chicago Fire, Love And Mercy). Currently, only three original cast members — S. Epatha Merkerson (Radio, Black Snake Moan, Pee-Wee’s Playhouse), Oliver Platt (The Bear, 2012, Love and Other Drugs), and Marlyne Barrett (Chicago Fire, Night Call, The Wire) — remain with the show. Season nine introduced new actors Luke Mitchell (The Tomorrow People, H20: Just Add Water, Black Water Abyss) to the ensemble, signaling a period of renewal and evolution for the series.
