The cast and showrunner of NBC’s cop comedy Brooklyn-Nine-Nine has announced that they have donated $100,000 in support of the nation wide George Floyd protests according to Entertainment Weekly. Specifically, the donation went towards the National Bail Fund Network, working alongside the protests against the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
The National Bail Fund Network revolves around bailing people out of jail or immigration detention. Ever since last week, protestors have been getting arrested while participating in demonstrations against police brutality via Entertainment Weekly. The network is run by the Community Justice Exchange, composed of greater than sixty community bail and bond funds across the country according to Deadline.
The series, created by Mike Schur (The Office) and Dan Goor (The Daily Show), stars Andy Samberg (Saturday Night Live) as a goofy yet talented and effective cop who’s good at his job. Statements posted on social media by cast members including Terry Crews (Everybody Hates Chris), Stephanie Beatriz (12), Samberg, and Andre Braugher (Homicide: Life on the Street), including showrunner Goor, promoting the hashtag #JusticeForGeorgeFloyd.
The Brooklyn Nine-Nine donation allegedly occurred following the calls from social media users directed towards actors who have portrayed police officers. Many fans wanted these actors to donate money towards organizations that benefited protestors in order to mold the public’s opinion about law enforcement.
Beatriz, known for her role as Detective Rosa Diaz on the comedy, was one of the first actors to take such actions. Early Tuesday morning, she announced to her large following that she will be donating $11,000 to the National Bail Fund Network.
