“Broadchurch” Comes to BBC America

A new British drama shows the stark difference between light and dark. In Broadchurch, a young boy is murdered in a seaside town.  The murder brings to light numerous scandals and secrets, changing the dynamics of the town forever.

The show which originally aired on ITV stars former Doctor Who star David Tennant.  Tennant plays dark and troubled detective Alec Hardy.  Hardy arrives in town and is paired up with Ellie Miller, played by Olivia Colman.  Hardy and Miller, as characters, are complete opposites.  While Hardy is obviously conflicted and haunted by his past, Miller is trusting and kind.  The Daily Beast reports that Hardy will serve as a bad influence on Detective Sergeant Miller.  Miller will begin to loose her trusting nature as the town’s dark secrets are revealed.

After failing to catch a child killer in his previous job, Hardy joins the local force in order to catch the murderer of 11-year-old Danny Latimer (Oskar McNamara).  This dark drama takes many twists and turns, promising to be different from the millions of police shows on the air.

Everyone in town has a secret and is a suspect in the heinous murder.  The Daily Beast reports that suspects range from newsagents (David Bradley) to members of the victim’s own family, namely the boy’s father (Andrew Buchan).  Interestingly, one of the suspects is played by Doctor Who actor Arthur Darvill (below), who played one of the Doctor’s companions in seasons five through seven.

According to the Daily Beast, Broadchurch was wildly popular when it aired in Britain, bringing in about 9 million consolidated viewers.  Of course, say David Tennant’s name, and scores of fan girls will come running.  Vulture reports that Broadchurch will air on BBC America on August 7.
