Peter Vaughan, known for Brazil and Game of Thrones, has passed away at 93 years old.
Vaughan had a long, memorable career in film and television that spanned over six decades of work. The British character actor made his mark on movies like Terry Gilliam’s Brazil and Sam Peckinpah’s Straw Dogs. On the television side Vaughan is known for his part as Harry ‘Grouty’ Grout in Porridge, as Charlie Johnson on Citizen Smith, and for portraying Maester Aemon in eleven episodes of HBO’s Game of Thrones.
Peter Vaughan first debuted as Maester Aemon in the third episode of GoT, “Lord Snow”. He appeared as Maester Aemon throughout seasons 3, 4, and 5 as well. His final episode was season five’s seventh episode “The Gift”. Aemon warns Gilly and her son that they must leave the Wall before winter comes. Later, Aemon gets lost in thought about his fond memories of his brother Egg as he peacefully passes away followed by a eulogy from Sam at Castle Black.
Vaughan’s agent, Sally Long-Innes, confirmed the actor’s passing earlier today, NME reports. “This is to confirm that very sadly Peter Vaughan passed away at approximately 10:30 this morning. He died peacefully with his family around him.”
