The HBO original series Ballers has just hit it big by garnering a third season just two episodes into season 2.
Series lead Dwayne Johnson released a tweet today with the headline “BREAKING: Baller alert” which contained a link to his Instagram account.
The Instagram link leads to picture for a season 3 promo of Ballers, with Johnson looking dapper as ever in his presumably XXXXL size suit.
In the post, Johnson congratulates his fellow cast, crew, producers, and show creator Stephen Levinson (Boardwalk Empire) on their hard work and dedication to making sure Ballers was a success. Johnson also paid a huge thanks to HBO and fans of the show, stating “To all our BALLER FANS out there – THANK YOU! Millions of you tune in every week to join us on this crazy journey of chasin’ greatness and dealin’ with life’s pain… and the greatest compliment we always hear from you is that we’re real and authentic. Means the world considering how close this character is to my bones.”
Johnson also hinted at something regarding the context of season 2 of Ballers. Johnson wrote “Now that you know there’s gonna be a Season 3.. you’ll be watchin’ this season with a different eye.”
Casey Bloys, president of HBO programming also extended his congratulations and excitement for the Baller season 3 announcement, stating “Dwayne Johnson, Stephen Levinson, Mark Wahlberg and the rest of the Ballers team have once again delivered a winner for our viewers”. “We look forward to another great season of Ballers next year.”
Ballers is a television comedy-drama set in Miami that centers around the lives of former and current football players and their families. The show follows Spencer Strasmore (Dwayne Johnson), a retired NFL superstar turned financial manager, as he figures out his life post retirement while attempting to guide and mentor current football players, and other retirees through the workings and business of football. The series co-stars Rob Corddry (Childrens Hospital), London Brown, and Troy Garity. The series also features Mark Wahlberg, who worked with Johnson on the 2013 film Pain & Gain, as an executive producer. The series premiered June 21, 2015 with the second season premiering July 17, 2016.
Fans of Ballers should still remain tentative about season 3. HBO has been known to pull the plug on shows even after they have been approved for additional seasons. Just last month, HBO canceled the second season of its original drama Vinyl after it met with poor reviews, despite the fact that it had already been approved for an additional season prior to the shows premiere. Fortunately, Ballers has already proved its worth with season 1, which did well with critics and averaged 9.1 million viewers in gross audience, making it the biggest half-hour series on HBO in 6 years, so the shows fate is a bit more secure, but not set in stone.
The second season still has a while to go till it’s complete, so be sure to check that out on HBO Sunday nights at 10 p.m., and in the words of Dwayne Johnson “Enjoy and have fun with it and above all else… Ball so hard.”
