Apple TV+ has picked up Drops of God from Legendary Entertainment, beating out a number of prospective buyers for the series, which is in multiple languages including English, French, and Japanese, according to Deadline.
The drama series is based on a Japanese manga series 神の雫 (Kami, no Shizuku), written by siblings Yuko and Shin Kibayashi with artwork by Shu Okimoto, via Deadline. It follows a woman who discovers the world’s greatest wine collection that’s left by her estranged father and competes against a Japanese man to claim her inheritance.
According to Deadline, the majority of Apple’s scripted series have been fully owned originals, and this is the first time that Apple has become involved in international co-productions and licensing.
Drops of God is written by Quoc Dang Tran, who is known for writing French series Call My Agent and Disney+’s first French-language series Parallèles, and is directed by Oden Ruskin, who is known for directing episodes of Amazon’s Absentia and Hulu’s No Man’s Land, via Deadline.
The series stars Fleur Geffrier (Elle, Je Suis Karl), Tomohisa Yamashita (The Head, The Man from Toronto), Makiko Watanabe (Love Exposure, M/Other), Satoshi Nikaido (The Last Samurai, Babel), Antoine Chappey (The Letter, I Can’t Sleep), and Tom Wozniczka (Magellan, Nico). Deadline reports that the budget of this series is around $30 million, and is filmed in France, Japan, and Italy.
